Mackerel Islands

OVERVIEW

Home to a fringing reef, sandy beaches, secluded bays, gorgeous sunsets and wildlife encounters, the Mackerel Islands, located north of Exmouth/Ningaloo, are a little slice of barefoot paradise.

Access is via a 30-minute scenic flight from Exmouth or a 45-minute ferry from Onslow. Perched on the beach sand, the island's spacious, air-conditioned cabins are dotted along the main bay. Simple but comfortable, each one features a kitchen, lounge and dining area. Spend the days swimming in calm bays, snorkelling the coral reefs, kayaking and paddle boarding, beach fishing for a fresh seafood catch, bird watching and discovering giant Osprey nests, exploring the eco trail walk, stargazing, turtle spotting and whale watching in the winter months.

Complimentary transfers to/from the Onslow Beach Resort and the ferry departure jetty are available for Mackerel Islands guests.

Tours: Complimentary tours include Guided Reef Walk at Low Tide, Sunset 4WD Bus Tour, Beach 4WD Bus Trip, Island Sustainability Tour, Beginner Fishing Clinic. Self-guided tours include Turtle Interaction, Whale Watching, Bird Watching, Reef Snorkelling, Beach Fishing, Island Eco Trail Walk.
Additional optional tours are available e.g. Island Reef Eco Snorkel Tour, Sunset Boat Cruise Tour.
Tours are subject to weather conditions and may be substituted.

Activity Hire: The Mackerel Islands offer the following for hire from our activity centre on the island: island explorer hire boats, kayaks, SUP/stand up paddle boards, body boards with reef viewing panels, snorkel sets, fishing rods, beach cricket and volleyball games.

Housekeeping Service: Cabins are serviced every 4 days.

Boat Moorings: Guests can travel on their own boat to the Mackerel Islands. Boat moorings are available for hire, please enquire for pricing. Bookings are essential.

Scenic Air Transfers: The Mackerel Islands can organise a charter plane to transfer guests from Exmouth or Karratha on a light plane scenic flight. Flight time is approximately 35 minutes. Contact us for details, pricing and availability.

Car Parking: Secure parking is available on the mainland in Onslow. Please enquire for pricing.

Island Facilities: General store, tour & activity hire centre, guest laundry, BBQ’s, communal freezer to store your fishing catch, airstrip, boat moorings, boat fuel facilities, state-of-the-art solar power and desalination plant providing fresh water. Please note the island operates a cashless system; credit or debit cards must be used for making payments.

Groceries: Guests can purchase groceries from the supermarket in Onslow to bring over to the Mackerel Islands.

Dinner Under The Stars: We host a casual island dinner on Tuesdays and Saturdays, please enquire for pricing. Pre-booking essential.
